US Congressman Tom Suozzi emphasized Pakistan’s significant yet often overlooked role in the global fight against terrorism, urging the international community to recognize its contributions. Speaking at a virtual press conference alongside Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, Suozzi described terrorism as a major worldwide challenge and acknowledged Pakistan’s frontline position in countering this threat.

As chair of the Congressional Pakistan Caucus, Suozzi highlighted the importance of the longstanding US-Pakistan partnership, which has endured for over 80 years. He also drew attention to Pakistan’s economic progress and future potential, suggesting these areas merit greater global focus. Advocating for stronger bilateral relations, Suozzi expressed US interest in boosting investment in Pakistan, stressing that economic growth is crucial for enhancing security.

He voiced particular concern about how terrorism has hindered development in Balochistan, while noting Pakistan’s strategic geographic location enhances its significance on the global stage. Ambassador Sheikh reinforced Pakistan’s role as a frontline state in the war on terror, noting the heavy toll it has suffered. He pointed out that the Pakistani population continues to face threats, especially terrorism originating from neighboring Afghanistan, often at great human cost.

Sheikh also highlighted Pakistan’s historic diplomatic efforts in promoting global peace, including its key role in facilitating improved relations between the United States and China. In a significant development, Suozzi suggested Pakistan could serve as a constructive mediator amid recent tensions between the US and Iran, given its diplomatic ties with both nations. Sheikh added that Pakistan’s prime minister has clearly stated the country’s position and reaffirmed Islamabad’s commitment to peaceful resolution, while emphasizing that the ultimate responsibility rests with the involved parties.

During the press conference, concerns were raised about the challenges Pakistanis face in obtaining US visas. Suozzi pledged to collaborate with Republican lawmakers to address these issues and is considering writing to the administration to seek improvements in the visa process.
