Regulator Probes Meta Over Privacy Concerns Linked to AI Glasses Video Reviews

Meta, the tech giant behind popular social media platforms, has come under regulatory scrutiny following revelations that videos captured by its AI-powered glasses were being reviewed by subcontractors based in Kenya. These videos reportedly included highly sensitive footage, such as individuals using the restroom or engaging in intimate activities, sparking widespread concern over privacy violations and ethical standards.

The issue came to light when it was discovered that some of the content recorded by users of Meta’s AI glasses was being accessed and evaluated by third-party workers tasked with monitoring and improving the device’s functionality. The involvement of a Kenya-based subcontractor has raised questions about data security protocols and the extent to which users’ personal moments are protected from unauthorized viewing.

This development has prompted regulatory bodies to initiate formal inquiries into Meta’s data handling practices. Authorities are examining whether the company adequately informed users about the potential for such video reviews and if proper consent mechanisms were in place. The sensitive nature of the footage has intensified calls for stricter oversight of AI technologies that collect and process personal data.

Experts highlight that while AI glasses represent a significant advancement in wearable technology, they also introduce complex challenges related to privacy and ethical use. The fact that intimate and private moments were reportedly subject to human review underscores the need for transparent policies and robust safeguards to protect users from invasive surveillance.

Meanwhile, Meta has yet to issue a comprehensive public statement addressing these concerns. The company is expected to cooperate with regulators and possibly revise its data management frameworks to restore public trust. This incident serves as a critical reminder of the delicate balance between innovation and privacy in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-driven devices.
