Instagram has introduced Instagram Instants, a new feature aimed at making photo sharing faster, more spontaneous, and less polished. Released worldwide on Wednesday, this update enables users to send fleeting photos to friends that vanish after being viewed, emphasizing Instagram’s shift toward more private communication.
Unlike the broader reach of Stories, Instagram Instants targets smaller, more intimate groups. Users can share images directly with Close Friends or mutual followers via Instagram’s inbox, where the feature is represented as a compact stack of photos in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
Instagram Instants allows users to send casual, unedited photos accompanied by captions that disappear once seen by recipients. Recipients can react and reply to these instants, with responses delivered straight to direct messages. Additionally, users have the option to retract a post shortly after sharing if they reconsider.
This feature contrasts with Stories in a significant way: Stories remain visible for 24 hours and reach a wider audience, whereas Instants are designed for private, immediate sharing within close circles.
In a notable development, Instagram is also experimenting with a standalone Instants app in select countries, aimed at users seeking quicker camera access. This separate app connects to the user’s existing Instagram account, ensuring that content shared through either platform appears for friends on both.
Instagram has stated that shared instants are privately archived for up to one year and can later be compiled into recap Stories. The platform also confirmed that existing Teen Account protections, parental supervision features, Sleep Mode, and screen time limits will automatically apply to Instants.
Currently, Instagram Instants is accessible globally within the main Instagram app, while the standalone Instants app remains available only in certain regions.
