Amazon Set to Relaunch Phone Over a Decade After Fire Phone Flop

Amazon is preparing to release a new smartphone, marking its first entry into the mobile market in more than ten years. The device, internally named “Transformer,” is designed to function as a “mobile personalization device” that seamlessly integrates with Amazon’s voice assistant, Alexa.

In a significant development, the phone aims to simplify user interaction with Amazon’s ecosystem, including services like Amazon shopping, Prime Video streaming, and Prime Music listening. Artificial intelligence will be a core component of the device’s functionality, although Alexa might not serve as the phone’s primary operating system. This indicates Amazon could be leveraging AI technology from another company to power the device.

Meanwhile, this new initiative recalls Amazon’s earlier attempt with the Fire Phone, launched in 2014 and discontinued within about a year due to poor market reception. Unlike the Fire Phone, which featured a pseudo-3D interface and was limited by the AI capabilities of its time, the upcoming phone is expected to benefit from today’s more advanced AI technologies.

The project is still in its early stages, with Amazon anticipated to handle the full assembly of the device. Details such as the official launch date, pricing, and projected revenue remain undisclosed at this point.
