Arsenal’s recent signing, Bruno Guimaraes, faces uncertainty ahead of Friday’s Premier League opener against newly promoted Coventry City, with manager Mikel Arteta expressing concerns over the midfielder’s fitness. Guimaraes, who joined from Newcastle United this month in a deal valued at $102 million by British media, was seen applying ice to his leg after being substituted in Sunday’s Community Shield victory over Manchester City.
“His condition is improving, but we will have to wait and see,” Arteta commented on Thursday regarding Guimaraes’ injury status. The manager emphasized the importance of maintaining player fitness as Arsenal prepare to defend their Premier League crown.
Last season, injuries significantly impacted Arsenal’s title aspirations, with key players such as Kai Havertz, Martin Odegaard, and Gabriel Jesus sidelined for extended periods. Arteta highlighted the need to enhance squad availability to increase their competitive edge. “The more dominant we are, the greater the margins, and the better our chances. We must improve player availability in certain areas to widen those margins,” he explained.
Arsenal, who hold 14 English top-flight titles and rank third on the all-time list, have yet to retain the Premier League trophy since its inception, although they achieved three consecutive championships in the 1930s. Arteta, however, expressed optimism about this season, stating, “I feel good. Different. Hopefully better. More excited and hungrier than ever. I have no doubt our players share this desire. Now, it’s about delivering daily.”
In a significant development, Arteta addressed transfer matters, acknowledging Arsenal’s efforts to strengthen their defense amid reports of a $69.52 million agreement with Aston Villa for England centre-back Ezri Konsa. “We will inform you when we are ready to announce any deals,” he said.
The manager also dismissed rumors about the potential departure of versatile youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly, affirming with certainty that the 19-year-old will remain at the club. Nonetheless, Arteta admitted that some players might need to leave, amid speculation surrounding Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, and Ethan Nwaneri.
“This is a challenging period, but it must be approached with honesty and transparency,” Arteta remarked. “We all understand that every chapter has a beginning and an end. When it concludes, our responsibility is to handle it with respect and admiration for the player and the relationship. Ultimately, difficult decisions are necessary.”
