Ireland achieved a full 10-point haul from their first two matches in the Nations Championship by overcoming Japan 36-20 in a fiercely contested game held in Newcastle, Australia, on Saturday.
The Irish squad, featuring several changes, delivered an impressive five-try performance to secure a bonus-point victory. Head coach Andy Farrell introduced four players who earned their international debuts during the match.
Japan, coming off a win against Italy, once again showed resilience against the world’s third-ranked team. They remained competitive until the closing stages, trailing by only six points with ten minutes left on the clock.
Farrell expressed relief at the outcome and commended his team for overcoming the tough challenge posed by Japan. He highlighted the significance of the win given the number of debutants and the quality of the opposition.
The match began strongly for Japan at the neutral venue, with winger Taira Main breaking through Ireland’s defense to score a 60-metre try. Ireland responded robustly through their forwards, with flanker Nick Timoney and prop Tom O’Toole crossing the line. Centre Robbie Henshaw also added a try, giving Ireland a 19-13 lead at halftime.
After the break, Ireland maintained dominance in the forward pack. Debutant number eight Sean Jansen scored his first Test try from close range, extending Ireland’s advantage.
Japan fought back before the hour mark when replacement hooker Hayate Era scored, narrowing the deficit to six points and keeping Eddie Jones’ side within striking distance.
However, Ireland sealed the win with a penalty and a late try from replacement hooker Tom Stewart, securing the crucial bonus point.
Despite the loss, Japan impressed in the scrum and caused difficulties for Ireland, who also struggled at the lineout with hooker Ronan Kelleher twice failing to deliver straight throws.
Props Billy Bohan and Sam Illo, along with back-row Bryn Ward, made their international debuts off the bench for Ireland.
Looking ahead, Ireland will focus on their upcoming match against New Zealand at Eden Park. Meanwhile, Japan is set to host France in Tokyo next Saturday for their third Nations Championship fixture.
