San Jose Earthquakes Aim to Extend Clean Sheet Streak vs San Diego FC

San Jose Earthquakes are set to host San Diego FC on Saturday night in a crucial All-California MLS matchup, aiming to maintain their impressive defensive record. The Earthquakes have kept four clean sheets in their first five games, a significant improvement compared to last season when they narrowly missed the playoffs.

In a notable development, second-year head coach Bruce Arena attributed this defensive success to the collective effort of the entire team rather than just the back line and goalkeeper. Brazilian goalkeeper Daniel has been outstanding, saving 14 out of 15 shots on target and recording four clean sheets so far. A fifth shutout would match his MLS career best, highlighting his vital role in San Jose’s defensive revival.

Offensively, the Earthquakes have seen contributions from several players. Ousseni Bouda, Preston Judd, and Daniel Munie have each scored twice, while former Tottenham and RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner has provided two assists and is gradually regaining full match fitness.

Meanwhile, San Diego FC arrives following a demanding schedule that included two rounds in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Although they were eliminated 6-3 on aggregate by Toluca, coach Mikey Varas believes the experience will help his team maintain composure under pressure. San Diego remains unbeaten in league play, with Marcus Ingvartsen leading their attack with four goals and Anders Dreyer adding three.

However, San Diego will be without Christopher McVey, who is suspended for one game after receiving a red card, potentially impacting their defensive solidity. As the Earthquakes prepare to face their California rivals, attention will focus on whether they can extend their clean sheet streak and solidify their status as early Western Conference contenders.
