PIMS Finalizes Imran Khan’s Medical Fitness Report, Details Kept Confidential

The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has finalized the medical fitness report for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder and former prime minister Imran Khan following his overnight transfer from Adiala Jail. The hospital confirmed that the contents of the report will remain confidential in line with Supreme Court instructions.

Khan was moved to the state-run hospital during the night between August 20 and 21 for medical examination and treatment. The assessment involved two specialists from Shifa International Hospital who assisted with the eye examination, while other evaluations were conducted by PIMS’s relevant experts.

A medical board formed by PIMS doctors completed the fitness report. The hospital emphasized that the report’s details would not be disclosed publicly, adhering strictly to the Supreme Court’s directives.

This development occurred amid controversy regarding Khan’s transfer from Adiala Jail and differing narratives about the nature of his medical examination at PIMS.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that Khan was taken to the hospital under proper security arrangements in compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling during the night of August 20-21. He noted that a team of qualified doctors, including an eye specialist, cardiologist, and physician, conducted a thorough examination and declared Khan medically fit. Tarar also mentioned that Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan, was present throughout the process. Khan was reportedly returned to Adiala Jail around 5 a.m. on August 21.

However, Dr Uzma Khan challenged this account, claiming that only a brief examination took place at PIMS and that the officials did not have access to her brother’s full medical records. She indicated that the family had expected Khan to be taken to Shifa International Hospital and alleged that only his eyes and blood pressure were checked during the visit.

Separately, Dr Faisal Sultan, Khan’s personal physician, said he had traveled to Shifa International Hospital and waited for several hours after being informed that Khan was expected there, contradicting the government’s version of events.

In a significant development, the Supreme Court had ordered on August 18 that Khan be transferred to Shifa International Hospital within 48 hours for specialist examination and treatment by a medical board including Dr Faisal Sultan. The federal government later requested the Court to rescind this order, arguing that permitting a prisoner treatment at a private hospital of choice could create an unfavorable precedent for other inmates. The government also stated that the order was issued without hearing a necessary party and conflicted with the Pakistan Prison Rules of 1978.
