Trump Affirms Strong US-Pakistan Relations, Declines to Mediate Islamabad-Kabul Border Conflict

As clashes continue to escalate along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, United States President Donald Trump has made it clear that Washington will refrain from intervening in the ongoing conflict between Islamabad and Kabul. Despite the rising hostilities, Trump emphasized his strong personal and diplomatic ties with Pakistan, highlighting the respect he holds for the country’s leadership. This stance signals a cautious US approach amid a volatile regional security situation.

The recent outbreak of violence followed a significant escalation when Pakistan launched a robust military response after Afghan Taliban forces initiated unprovoked attacks along multiple sectors of the border in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including areas such as Chitral, Khyber, Mohmand, Kurram, and Bajaur. Pakistan’s counteroffensive, dubbed Operation Ghazab lil-Haq or “Righteous Fury,” involved coordinated strikes by the Pakistan Armed Forces and the Pakistan Air Force targeting key Taliban positions in Afghan cities like Kandahar, Kabul, and Paktia. These operations reportedly inflicted heavy casualties on the Afghan Taliban, with Pakistani authorities confirming the deaths of over 330 militants.

However, the conflict has come at a significant cost for Pakistan as well, with 12 security personnel losing their lives and 27 others wounded during the retaliatory strikes. The intensity of the fighting has raised concerns about a potential full-scale war between the neighboring countries, a scenario that could destabilize an already fragile region. Despite this, President Trump reiterated that while the United States has the capability to intervene, it currently prefers to maintain a hands-off approach due to its positive relations with Pakistan.

Speaking to reporters, Trump praised Pakistan’s leadership, describing the Prime Minister and the military chief as “great” and expressing his personal admiration for both. He remarked on Pakistan’s progress and strength, suggesting that Washington views Islamabad as a key partner rather than an adversary. This endorsement comes amid ongoing US efforts to balance its strategic interests in South Asia, particularly as it continues to navigate complex relations with Afghanistan’s Taliban government.

Meanwhile, the US State Department has officially expressed support for Pakistan’s right to defend itself against attacks originating from the Taliban, which it designates as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group. The department acknowledged the recent surge in hostilities and expressed sorrow over the loss of life on both sides. It also reiterated concerns about Afghanistan being used as a base for terrorist activities, highlighting the Taliban’s failure to meet counterterrorism commitments made under previous agreements.

The current flare-up is rooted in a series of militant attacks within Pakistan, including suicide bombings in Islamabad, Bajaur, and Bannu, which Islamabad traced back to groups operating from Afghan territory. In response, Pakistan conducted intelligence-driven strikes against seven terrorist camps along the border, targeting factions of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), its affiliates, and Daesh-Khorasan. Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Afghan Taliban authorities of providing safe havens to these militant groups, a charge that Afghan officials have denied.

Adding to the diplomatic complexity, Pakistan’s Prime Minister’s spokesperson for Foreign Media, Mosharraf Zaidi, highlighted that the Taliban’s alleged support for these groups violates the commitments made under the Doha Agreement. This agreement, brokered in 2025, aimed to establish a ceasefire and halt cross-border terrorism. Despite initial ceasefire arrangements and follow-up talks mediated by Qatar and Turkey, progress has been limited, with Kabul often using diplomatic forums to criticize Pakistan rather than addressing Islamabad’s core security concerns.

As tensions persist, the prospect of renewed dialogue remains uncertain. Afghan authorities have expressed willingness to negotiate following Pakistan’s recent strikes on their forces in major cities, but mutual distrust continues to hamper meaningful engagement. The situation remains fragile, with the potential to impact regional stability and international diplomatic efforts aimed at peace and counterterrorism cooperation in South Asia.
