Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir’s recent visit to Iran has yielded promising advancements toward reaching a final agreement, following his meetings with the country’s top civil and military officials. The brief but highly productive trip involved high-level discussions focused on accelerating the consultative process to foster peace and stability in the region.
During his visit, Field Marshal Munir met with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni. These engagements were part of Pakistan’s ongoing mediation efforts to promote de-escalation and constructive dialogue amid the ongoing conflict.
Munir arrived in Tehran on Friday as Pakistan intensified its role as a key intermediary between the United States and Iran. This mediation follows the outbreak of hostilities in the Middle East triggered by joint US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. Pakistan successfully brokered a two-week ceasefire on April 8, ending six weeks of fighting, and continues to facilitate communication between Washington and Tehran.
In a significant development, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated optimism about a potential deal, stating there was a possibility Tehran might accept terms to end the conflict imminently. Rubio expressed hope for positive news within days during remarks in New Delhi. Meanwhile, Iran remains focused on finalizing a memorandum of understanding through talks mediated by Pakistan.
The discussions led by Field Marshal Munir were described as taking place in a positive and constructive atmosphere, contributing meaningfully to the peace process. The intensive negotiations over the past 24 hours have brought encouraging progress toward a conclusive understanding.
Iranian officials expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s sincere and constructive role in facilitating dialogue and advancing peaceful resolutions to regional issues. Upon arrival in Tehran, Munir was welcomed by the Iranian interior minister along with senior civil and military representatives, underscoring the importance of this diplomatic mission.
