Security and logistical arrangements have been significantly reinforced in anticipation of Prince Rahim al-Hussaini Aga Khan V’s upcoming visit to Gilgit-Baltistan. The spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili community is scheduled to arrive later this month, prompting authorities to mobilize both federal and regional resources to ensure a smooth and secure visit.
The visit is planned from May 21 to May 25 and will be conducted with the status of a state guest. During his stay, Prince Rahim Aga Khan is expected to tour various locations across Gilgit-Baltistan, participate in public gatherings, and deliver addresses at several ceremonies.
In a significant development, Prince Rahim Aga Khan V officially became the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims on February 11, 2025, following the passing of his father and predecessor, Imam Shah Karim al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, who died on February 4, 2025.
Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, Amir Muqam, was briefed on the preparations during a meeting held on Friday. Officials highlighted that large crowds are anticipated at key locations including Passu Cones in Hunza, Gilgit city, Gahkuch Bala, Taus Yasin, and Ishkoman. To manage the expected influx, the administration is considering organizing multiple sessions at some venues.
For enhanced security and transportation, the federal government has been requested to provide a bulletproof vehicle for the state guest. Additionally, authorities have proposed opening Babusar Road as an alternative route and have placed the National Highway Authority on high alert at sensitive points.
Special responsibilities have been assigned to the police and the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) for road improvements, traffic control, and security along the Karakoram Highway, particularly from Nasirabad Bridge to Sost Dry Port.
Instructions have also been issued to ensure an uninterrupted power supply in Upper Hunza and surrounding areas throughout the visit. To facilitate visitor movement, additional transport arrangements are underway, along with relaxed travel timings across the region.
The briefing meeting included the Gilgit-Baltistan chief secretary, administrative secretaries, law enforcement officials, and representatives from the Ismaili Regional Council. Representatives from the Aga Khan Regional Council expressed satisfaction with the preparations, while Minister Amir Muqam assured full cooperation from the federal government.
