During the second day of his Australian tour, Britain’s Prince Harry candidly addressed the challenges of early fatherhood while visiting the Western Bulldogs Australian rules football club in Melbourne. Accompanied by his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, the couple is on a four-day trip focused on sport, mental health, and veterans’ issues.
At the football club’s training ground, Prince Harry delivered a speech highlighting his feelings of disconnection from his children and the role therapy has played in helping him confront and heal from past difficulties. He reflected on the emotional distance he experienced, noting that while his wife was physically creating life, he was more of an observer. He emphasized the importance of self-improvement through therapy to be the best father possible, stating he needed to address unresolved issues to move forward.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, parents to two children, Archie and Lilibet, did not bring their children on this trip. Since stepping back from their roles as senior members of the British royal family in 2020, they relocated to the United States seeking financial independence and relief from intense media scrutiny.
Public response to their visit in Australia has been mixed. While King Charles remains the nation’s head of state, a significant portion of Australians supports transitioning to a republic. The couple was warmly welcomed by hundreds of children and parents at a Melbourne children’s hospital on Tuesday, where their presence was seen as a source of hope for young patients.
However, some Australians have criticized the visit, questioning the couple’s motives. An opinion piece in a major Sydney newspaper described the trip as a continuation of disconnected self-promotion by a couple out of touch with reality. Although the couple’s travel expenses are privately funded, reports indicate that Australian taxpayers will cover some policing costs, prompting a protest petition with over 45,000 signatures.
Unlike their previous visit, Prince Harry will engage in commercial activities during this trip. Meanwhile, Meghan will remain in Australia over the weekend to host a wellness retreat at a luxury beachside hotel in Sydney. The event, featuring yoga, manifestation, and sound healing sessions, has tickets starting at A$2,699 ($1,912) per person.
