Middle East Airspace Gradually Reopens as Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad Resume Flights

After a week marked by significant disruptions in air travel across the Middle East, several leading airlines have begun cautiously restoring their flight operations. The recent escalation of conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States triggered widespread airspace closures, resulting in thousands of flight cancellations and leaving many passengers stranded. However, with the gradual reopening of regional skies, airlines are now taking measured steps to resume services and reconnect key international routes.

Qatar Airways announced that starting March 8, it would operate a limited number of flights to its hub in Doha. These flights will originate from several major global cities, including London, Paris, Madrid, Rome, Frankfurt, and Bangkok. This move reflects a careful approach to reestablishing connectivity while monitoring the evolving security situation. The airline’s decision to prioritize these important international destinations highlights its commitment to restoring vital travel links amid ongoing uncertainties.

Meanwhile, Dubai Airports confirmed that operations at Dubai International Airport partially resumed on March 7, signaling a significant step towards normalcy for one of the region’s busiest aviation hubs. Emirates, the flagship carrier of Dubai, has also begun reinstating some of its flights from the city, actively working to rebuild its extensive global network. Similarly, Etihad Airways, based in Abu Dhabi, has confirmed it will maintain a limited schedule of flights to the United Kingdom over the coming days, ensuring essential travel corridors remain open despite the volatile environment.

The recent airspace closures were a direct consequence of escalating military actions, including US and Israeli strikes targeting Iran, followed by retaliatory attacks across the Gulf region. These developments prompted authorities to impose flight restrictions to safeguard civilian air traffic, leading to widespread cancellations and travel chaos. The impact on passengers was severe, with many left stranded far from home as airlines scrambled to adjust their operations in response to the rapidly changing security landscape.

In response to the crisis, governments have initiated evacuation efforts to bring their citizens home safely. Notably, the UK Foreign Office arranged a second chartered flight transporting British nationals from the Middle East, which landed at Gatwick Airport early Saturday after departing from Muscat, Oman. This followed an earlier evacuation flight that arrived at Stansted Airport on Friday, which had experienced a 24-hour delay due to technical complications. These government-led operations underscore the urgency and complexity of managing civilian movements amid regional instability.

Despite the encouraging signs of partial airspace reopening and the resumption of limited flights, officials caution that the situation remains highly fluid. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to pose risks to aviation safety, and travel conditions could shift rapidly depending on developments on the ground. Passengers are advised to stay informed and prepare for potential changes as airlines and authorities navigate this challenging environment.
