In a significant development concerning Pakistan’s national security and regional diplomacy, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a high-level meeting in Islamabad today to thoroughly assess the current security landscape both within the country and across the region. The gathering brought together top military and civilian officials to discuss the evolving geopolitical dynamics and their implications for Pakistan’s stability and foreign policy.

The meeting provided an in-depth analysis of the prevailing regional environment, focusing on the complex security challenges facing Pakistan and its neighbors. Officials examined Pakistan’s strategic role in fostering peace and stability in a region marked by volatility, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to safeguard national interests. Particular attention was given to the situation in Afghanistan, where ongoing developments continue to impact regional security and humanitarian conditions.

Alongside regional concerns, the internal security scenario of Pakistan was also reviewed in detail. The Prime Minister was briefed on the current law and order arrangements, highlighting the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and protecting citizens amid rising uncertainties. This comprehensive security overview underscored the importance of coordinated efforts between civil authorities and the military to address emerging threats effectively.

One of the critical outcomes of the meeting was the Prime Minister’s directive to expedite the evacuation of Pakistani nationals stranded in Iran. The Foreign Office presented a detailed update on the ongoing operations to ensure their safe and timely return. It was revealed that Pakistan is facilitating the evacuation process through Azerbaijan, leveraging diplomatic channels to navigate the complex logistics involved. This move reflects the government’s priority to protect its citizens abroad during times of regional unrest.

The high-level session was attended by key figures including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, as well as several federal ministers such as Ahsan Iqbal, Mohsin Naqvi, Azam Nazeer Tarar, Ahad Khan Cheema, Attaullah Tarar, and Ali Pervaiz Malik. Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi and other senior civil and military officials also participated, underscoring the meeting’s importance and the unified approach towards national security challenges.

In a related development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has postponed his scheduled official visit to Russia, originally planned for March 2. The decision to defer the two-day trip to Moscow was taken in light of the rapidly changing and sensitive situation unfolding in the Middle East and the broader region. The Prime Minister’s Office communicated to Russian counterparts that the visit could not proceed under the current circumstances, reflecting Pakistan’s cautious stance amid escalating tensions.

Following the postponement, the Prime Minister called for this emergency meeting to deliberate on key national security matters and regional policy adjustments. Discussions are expected to shape Pakistan’s diplomatic posture in the coming weeks, including considerations regarding participation in the final rites of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. This reflects the delicate balancing act Pakistan must perform as it navigates complex regional alliances and security imperatives.
