Violent Clashes Outside US Consulate in Karachi Over Khamenei’s Death Spark Injuries and Roadbl…

In a tense and chaotic scene on Sunday, violent clashes broke out outside the United States consulate located on MT Khan Road in Karachi, resulting in injuries to at least five individuals. The unrest was triggered by protests condemning the recent US and Israeli strikes that reportedly led to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The demonstration quickly escalated as demonstrators attempted to breach the consulate’s security perimeter.

Eyewitnesses described how the protesters threw stones and other projectiles at the security forces guarding the consulate, prompting a forceful response from law enforcement. Police resorted to heavy shelling and other crowd control measures to disperse the agitated crowd and prevent further escalation. Emergency medical teams arrived promptly at the scene and confirmed that five people sustained injuries serious enough to require immediate hospital treatment.

In the aftermath of the clashes, authorities including the local police and paramilitary Rangers significantly increased security measures around the consulate and other sensitive locations throughout Karachi. Their primary objective was to restore order and ensure the safety of both the public and diplomatic personnel amid fears of additional protests or violent outbreaks.

The violent demonstration also caused widespread disruption to traffic in the surrounding areas. Key routes stretching from Sultanabad to Mai Kolachi were temporarily sealed off, leading to severe congestion and delays for commuters. Karachi traffic police swiftly implemented alternate routes to manage the flow of vehicles. For instance, traffic coming from Jinnah Bridge was rerouted to II Chundrigar Road, while vehicles from Boat Basin were diverted at Mai Kolachi Phatak. Additionally, traffic heading from the Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) area was turned back to avoid further gridlock.

In response to the incident, Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar demanded a comprehensive report from the Additional Inspector General of Karachi to fully assess the situation. He underscored the government’s firm stance against any form of vigilantism and stressed the importance of heightened security at all vulnerable sites across the province. His remarks highlighted the administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order while addressing the underlying tensions that led to the protest.

This episode reflects the broader regional sensitivities and the volatile atmosphere surrounding the recent developments in Iran, which have reverberated across Pakistan and other neighboring countries. The authorities remain on high alert to prevent any further disturbances and to safeguard diplomatic missions within Karachi, a city that often witnesses politically charged demonstrations.
