Rawalpindi and Islamabad Face Fifth Day of Heavy Rain, Emergency Ongoing

Rawalpindi and Islamabad have been enduring relentless heavy rain for the fifth consecutive day, prompting the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Rawalpindi to maintain a state of high alert and continue the rain emergency. WASA Managing Director Azizullah Khan confirmed that staff and heavy machinery have been deployed to manage waterlogging in vulnerable low-lying neighborhoods such as Gawalmandi, Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk Underpass, Mall Road, and Sadiqabad.

Additional drainage equipment and personnel have been stationed strategically in areas including City Saddar Road, Dhoke Khabba, Millat Colony, and Arya Mohallah to address the ongoing flooding. Continuous monitoring of Nullah Lai and other drainage channels is underway, with water levels recorded at 13 feet near Katarian and 11 feet at Gawalmandi Bridge, indicating significant accumulation.

Rainfall measurements from the Meteorological Department highlight varied precipitation across the region: Saidpur received 12mm, Golra 61mm, Bokra 36mm, the PMD office 37mm, Shamsabad 52mm, Kutchery 14mm, Pirodhai 29mm, Gawalmandi 35mm, and New Katarian 26mm. These figures underscore the widespread impact of the downpour.

WASA’s managing director remains actively engaged on the ground, coordinating drainage operations and collaborating closely with the district administration and other agencies to ensure readiness for any emergencies. Residents experiencing urgent issues are encouraged to contact the WASA helpline at 1334 for immediate assistance.

Meanwhile, heavy rains have also returned to Swabi, where flooding has affected several parts of the city. Water accumulation in low-lying areas has complicated travel and intensified drainage challenges, particularly in localities like Marghuz Thandkoi, where roads have turned into large pools of water. With the rain persisting, authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and vigilant.
