The Islamabad administration has announced a significant extension for the mandatory installation of M-Tags on motorcycles, pushing the deadline well beyond the previously set date. Initially, motorcycle owners were required to complete the tagging process by February 28, but the authorities have now granted additional time, allowing residents to install their M-Tags until March 5, 2026. This move comes as a response to public requests and aims to accommodate those who faced difficulties meeting the original deadline.
Deputy Commissioner and Director General Excise, Irfan Nawaz Memon, conveyed the decision, emphasizing that the extension was carefully considered to ease the burden on citizens. He highlighted that the extension would particularly benefit those who were unable to complete the process earlier due to heavy crowds or other logistical challenges. This additional time frame is expected to provide ample opportunity for motorcycle owners to comply without facing penalties.
In anticipation of the upcoming holy month of Ramadan, the administration has also revised the operating hours of M-Tag centers across the federal capital. To facilitate the installation process during fasting hours, some centers will now remain open around the clock, operating 24 hours a day. Others will function in shifts of 12 or 8 hours, ensuring that citizens can access services at convenient times. This adjustment aims to reduce congestion at service points and accelerate the overall tagging campaign.
Statistics released by officials reveal that the campaign is progressing steadily. So far, 8,928 motorcycles have been equipped with M-Tags, with 2,069 motorcycles tagged in just the last 24 hours. Overall, a total of 238,080 vehicles have received M-Tags, reflecting the administration’s ongoing commitment to enhancing traffic management and public safety in Islamabad. The M-Tag system is designed to improve vehicle tracking capabilities, making it easier for law enforcement agencies to monitor traffic violations and respond swiftly to incidents.
Authorities have reiterated that separate registration processes for motorcycles and online taxi services continue without interruption, underscoring the comprehensive approach to vehicle regulation in the city. Irfan Nawaz Memon urged all motorcycle owners to complete their M-Tag installations before the new deadline to avoid any legal consequences. He warned that failure to comply by March 5 could result in enforcement actions, including fines and other penalties.
The administration has appealed to the public for cooperation, stressing that timely compliance will not only help avoid fines but also contribute to smoother traffic flow and enhanced security throughout Islamabad. With the extended deadline and flexible service hours, officials are optimistic that the majority of motorcycle owners will complete the tagging process well before the new cutoff date.
