Remembering Operation Swift Retort: How Pakistan Air Force Shattered India’s Pride in 2019

February 27, 2019, remains etched in the collective memory of Pakistanis as a day when the nation’s skies resonated with unmatched pride and resolve. From the earliest hours of that morning, there was an unmistakable energy in the air—a potent mix of determination, patriotism, and a fierce sense of defense for the motherland. This day marked the execution of Operation Swift Retort, a meticulously planned and flawlessly executed response by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) that not only challenged but decisively humbled the Indian military establishment. As we commemorate the seventh anniversary of this historic operation, the pride that swells in the hearts of Pakistanis remains as vivid as it was then.

Looking across the border to India, one cannot help but wonder if the events of that day continue to haunt the Indian military leadership. The memories of February 27, 2019, should indeed be a source of sleepless nights for their commanders and a cause of anxiety within their defense circles. It is important to set aside the usual political rhetoric and propaganda to acknowledge the raw truth of what transpired. Historically, India’s political and military establishments have often resorted to manufactured crises, especially when domestic challenges intensify or elections loom near. The infamous Pulwama incident earlier that year is a glaring example, widely perceived as a politically motivated event designed to justify aggressive military posturing. Even prominent figures like Satya Pal Malik, the former Governor of occupied Kashmir, openly criticized the political manipulation behind such events. Fast forward to April 2025, and the pattern seems to repeat with the Pahalgam attack, raising serious questions about the cost of such political theatrics on the lives of soldiers and civilians alike.

India’s response to Pulwama was the so-called Balakot “surgical strike,” codenamed Operation Bandar. Indian media and officials loudly proclaimed the destruction of a massive Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp, claiming hundreds of militants were eliminated. However, independent investigations by international media outlets like Reuters and the BBC, supported by satellite imagery from neutral experts, revealed a starkly different reality. The targeted area was nothing more than an empty patch of land with a few trees—no camps, no casualties, just a costly and futile strike on nature. This glaring discrepancy exposed the operation as a propaganda stunt designed to bolster domestic support rather than achieve any tangible military objective. Such actions raise serious doubts about the credibility of India’s military claims and highlight the dangers of using armed conflict as a political tool.

In contrast, Pakistan’s response on February 27, 2019, was a demonstration of strategic restraint combined with military precision. Operation Swift Retort was not merely a retaliatory strike; it was a calculated display of Pakistan’s capability and responsibility as a nuclear-armed state. The PAF’s Shaheen fighter jets crossed the Line of Control in broad daylight, targeting Indian brigade headquarters and ammunition depots in Rajouri, Poonch, and Bhimber Gali. Yet, in a deliberate act of restraint, the bombs were dropped in empty areas adjacent to these military installations. This measured approach underscored Pakistan’s commitment to avoiding civilian casualties while sending a clear message to India: any violation of our sovereignty will be met with a swift and decisive response. Unlike India’s reckless provocations, Pakistan demonstrated maturity and discipline, emphasizing deterrence over destruction.

The aftermath of the operation further exposed the vulnerabilities of the Indian Air Force (IAF). In a hasty and disorganized reaction, Indian jets scrambled into Pakistani airspace, only to fall into a well-laid trap. The PAF swiftly engaged and shot down two Indian aircraft—a MiG-21 Bison and a Su-30MKI—dealing a severe blow to Indian aerial pride. The capture of Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who ejected and landed on Pakistani soil, became a defining moment. Far from treating him as an enemy, Pakistani forces rescued him from hostile locals, provided medical care, and extended the dignity of a prisoner of war. The now-famous phrase, “The tea is fantastic, thank you,” uttered by Abhinandan during his captivity, has since become a symbol of Pakistan’s humane conduct and a source of embarrassment for India. His eventual release on March 1, as a unilateral peace gesture, further highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to peace and regional stability despite provocations.

India’s attempts to salvage its battered image through fabricated claims of downing a Pakistani F-16 jet were quickly debunked. The United States, which supplies Pakistan’s F-16s, publicly confirmed that none of the aircraft were lost during the conflict, exposing Indian media’s falsehoods and turning the narrative into a global embarrassment for New Delhi. The chaos within the Indian ranks was further illustrated when their own SPYDER air defense system mistakenly shot down an Indian Mi-17 helicopter, compounding the humiliation. Such incidents raise serious questions about the professionalism and readiness of the Indian military leadership.

The lessons from Operation Swift Retort remain clear and relevant today. No matter how many advanced jets or sophisticated weaponry India acquires, it cannot match the courage, skill, and strategic acumen of Pakistan’s pilots and armed forces. The PAF’s JF-17 Thunder, F-16s, and Mirage jets continue to symbolize Pakistan’s aerial superiority and unwavering defense capabilities. As Pakistanis look to the skies each year on February 27, they pay homage to the heroes who defended the nation with valor and precision. The statue of Abhinandan Varthaman at the PAF Museum in Karachi stands not only as a reminder of past victories but as a stern warning to any aggressor contemplating future incursions.

In conclusion, the Pakistan Armed Forces—comprising the Army, Navy, and Air Force—remain united and prepared to defend the country’s sovereignty at all costs. The skies above Pakistan belong to the Shaheens, whose legacy was cemented on that unforgettable day in 2019. Operation Swift Retort was more than a military operation; it was a testament to Pakistan’s resilience, strategic wisdom, and commitment to peace through strength. As the nation celebrates this milestone, the message is unequivocal: any future attempts to challenge Pakistan’s sovereignty will be met with an even swifter and more decisive response. Pakistan Zindabad! Pakistan Air Force – the flag of the Shaheens will always fly high and proud.
