Ishaq Dar Engages Saudi and Turkish Counterparts on Rising Regional Border Tensions

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar conducted separate phone discussions with his counterparts in Turkey and Saudi Arabia to address the escalating security situation along Pakistan’s western border. These high-level conversations come in the wake of Pakistan’s recent military response to cross-border attacks by Taliban militants based in Afghanistan. The Foreign Office emphasized the importance of these diplomatic exchanges in managing the delicate regional dynamics.

Earlier this week, Pakistan launched a series of retaliatory airstrikes targeting Taliban-linked positions inside Afghanistan. Pakistani military sources confirmed that these operations, carried out under the codename ‘Ghazab Lil Haq,’ resulted in the deaths of 133 Afghan Taliban fighters and left over 200 others wounded. The strikes were a direct response to what Pakistani officials described as unprovoked and sustained cross-border firing by Taliban militants along multiple points in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. This marked a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between the two neighbors.

During his conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Ishaq Dar provided a detailed briefing on the recent developments along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The two leaders exchanged perspectives on the causes and consequences of the heightened tensions, with Dar underscoring Pakistan’s right to defend its sovereignty against aggression. The Turkish minister expressed concern over the situation and highlighted the necessity of maintaining peace and stability in the region. Both officials agreed to keep close communication channels open as the situation continues to evolve.

In a separate call, Ishaq Dar also engaged with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud to discuss the broader regional security landscape. The Pakistani foreign minister updated his Saudi counterpart on the military operations and Pakistan’s firm stance against cross-border attacks. The dialogue reaffirmed the mutual interest of both countries in fostering regional peace and security. They agreed that ongoing coordination and diplomatic engagement would be essential to prevent further escalation and to promote stability along the volatile Pak-Afghan border.

These diplomatic efforts highlight Pakistan’s approach to managing the complex security challenges posed by militant activities along its frontier. The government is keen to balance military action with sustained dialogue involving key regional partners. It is worth noting that the border region has long been a flashpoint due to the presence of various militant groups and the porous nature of the frontier. Pakistan’s recent military operations and subsequent diplomatic outreach reflect its commitment to safeguarding national security while seeking broader regional cooperation.
