The Punjab Police have significantly escalated their efforts to identify and deport illegal foreign nationals residing within the province, particularly focusing on Afghan nationals amid growing security concerns along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. This intensified operation has resulted in the deportation of a staggering 32,588 individuals, encompassing men, women, and children, who were found living without proper authorization in various districts, including the provincial capital, Lahore.
Breaking down the figures, the law enforcement agencies have successfully repatriated 12,273 men, 6,661 women, and 13,654 children, highlighting the broad demographic affected by this crackdown. This comprehensive approach reflects the authorities’ commitment to addressing the complex challenges posed by undocumented foreign residents, who often live in precarious conditions and sometimes contribute to the region’s security vulnerabilities.
Currently, 90 illegal foreign nationals remain detained at designated holding centers as part of ongoing efforts to process and deport them in accordance with established protocols. Among those already deported, a notable number possessed some form of documentation: 10,419 individuals had residential proof, while 11,098 carried Afghan Citizen Cards. However, a significant portion, totaling 11,071 people, were found to be residing without any valid identification or legal status, underscoring the scale of undocumented migration in the province.
Inspector General of Police Abdul Karim has reiterated the province’s heightened security posture, emphasizing that the Punjab Police are operating under strict adherence to international laws and human rights standards during the deportation process. He urged all illegal foreign nationals to voluntarily leave the province to avoid detention or forced removal, stressing that these measures are part of a broader strategy to safeguard public safety and national security.
This intensified deportation campaign comes at a critical juncture when the government is grappling with multiple security threats along the western border. The Punjab Police’s proactive stance is designed not only to enforce immigration laws but also to mitigate risks associated with unregulated cross-border movement.
