US-Iran Nuclear Talks Show Progress but End Without Final Agreement Amid Rising Tensions

In a significant yet inconclusive development, the United States and Iran engaged in intense negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program on Thursday, with Oman acting as the mediator. Despite several hours of discussions in Switzerland, the talks concluded without a definitive breakthrough that could prevent the looming threat of potential US military action. The diplomatic efforts, however, did indicate some forward movement, offering a glimmer of hope that further dialogue might ease escalating tensions in the region.

Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi shared an optimistic update following the day’s sessions, revealing that both parties plan to resume talks shortly after consulting with their respective governments. He announced that technical-level meetings are scheduled to take place next week in Vienna, signaling a continued commitment to diplomacy. These developments come at a critical juncture, as any meaningful progress toward an agreement could significantly reduce the chances of a US strike, which many fear might spiral into a broader conflict.

The indirect negotiations involved Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who met twice during the day in Geneva. Albusaidi described the discussions as having achieved “significant progress,” though he refrained from providing specific details or confirming that the most challenging issues had been resolved. Araqchi, speaking to Iranian state media, characterized the talks as among the most serious Iran has held with the US, noting that while agreements were reached on certain points, substantial differences remain. He confirmed that the next round of negotiations would occur within a week, emphasizing Iran’s firm stance on the lifting of US sanctions.

Washington, on the other hand, has consistently maintained that sanctions relief will only be possible if Tehran makes substantial concessions, particularly concerning its nuclear ambitions and regional activities. The US team has yet to publicly comment on the outcome of the Geneva meetings, though a senior official described the talks as “positive.” These discussions are unfolding against a backdrop of heightened anxiety over the possibility of a Middle Eastern conflict, with the US military reinforcing its presence near Iranian waters in response to President Donald Trump’s repeated warnings of potential action if no deal is reached.

Earlier on Thursday, a senior Iranian official suggested that a framework for an agreement might be achievable if Washington agreed to separate nuclear issues from other contentious topics such as Iran’s ballistic missile program and its support for armed groups across the region. The Trump administration, however, insists that these matters must be addressed within the scope of negotiations. Following the morning session, Albusaidi highlighted the exchange of “creative and positive ideas,” though Iranian officials acknowledged that significant gaps still need to be bridged.

The core of the dispute centers on Iran’s uranium enrichment activities, which Washington views as a pathway to developing nuclear weapons, a claim Tehran denies. Iran has expressed willingness to show flexibility during the talks, reportedly offering new, unspecified concessions in exchange for sanctions relief and recognition of its right to enrich uranium. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has criticized Iran’s refusal to discuss its missile program, labeling it a major obstacle that must eventually be overcome. Rubio claimed these missiles are designed to target America and destabilize the region, though no concrete evidence was presented to support the assertion that US territory is at risk.

President Trump has set a tight deadline for reaching an agreement, warning on February 19 that Iran must come to terms within 10 to 15 days or face “really bad things.” During his recent State of the Union address, Trump reiterated his preference for a diplomatic resolution but made clear he would not tolerate Iran acquiring nuclear weapons. The US has escalated pressure on Tehran since last summer, when it joined Israel in striking Iranian nuclear sites, and has increased military deployments in the region following Iran’s suppression of nationwide protests earlier this year.

Iran’s response to these actions has been forceful, including missile attacks on Israel and stern threats of retaliation if further strikes occur. This cycle of aggression has heightened fears of a wider regional war, causing concern among Gulf oil producers and international observers alike. Internally, Iran faces significant challenges as Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei confronts the most severe crisis of his 36-year leadership, with the economy suffering under intensified sanctions and renewed civil unrest following the January crackdown.

Adding to the complexity, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated on Thursday that Khamenei has issued a religious decree banning weapons of mass destruction, underscoring Tehran’s official position against developing nuclear arms. This declaration aligns with longstanding Iranian claims but remains a point of skepticism for many in the international community. As the diplomatic process continues, all eyes remain on the upcoming rounds of talks, hoping for a resolution that can defuse one of the world’s most volatile flashpoints.
