The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provincial cabinet convened recently to deliberate on a broad spectrum of developmental priorities, resulting in the approval of several significant measures aimed at enhancing public services across the region. This latest session underscored the government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery, social welfare programs, educational support, and critical infrastructure expansion throughout the province.
One of the most notable decisions involved allocating upwards of Rs4.06 billion to address the persistent shortage of medical personnel in KP’s public hospitals. This substantial funding will facilitate the recruitment of 2,439 healthcare professionals, including doctors, dental surgeons, and nurses, all to be hired on fixed-pay contracts. The move is designed to bolster the capacity of healthcare facilities and ensure more comprehensive medical coverage for the province’s growing population.
In addition to healthcare improvements, the cabinet took decisive steps to combat the social challenge of organized begging, particularly focusing on protecting vulnerable children. To this end, a dedicated rehabilitation fund was sanctioned, aimed at providing support and rehabilitation services to children exploited in begging rings. This initiative reflects the provincial government’s broader efforts to safeguard child rights and promote social welfare.
On the agricultural front, the cabinet approved the Wheat Procurement and Strategic Reserves Hybrid Policy for the year 2026. This policy is expected to streamline wheat procurement processes and enhance food security. Furthermore, the provincial government agreed to reconcile outstanding wheat procurement payments exceeding Rs38 billion with the federal government, while the remaining dues will be settled with the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO). These financial arrangements are crucial for maintaining stability in the agricultural supply chain.
Education also featured prominently in the cabinet’s agenda, with approval granted for a Rs196 million grant aimed at supporting minority students. This funding will be utilized to provide laptops and other educational resources, thereby fostering greater inclusivity and access to technology-enhanced learning opportunities for marginalized communities.
Strengthening legal protections for women in the workplace was another key outcome of the meeting. The cabinet endorsed amendments to the Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act 2010, reinforcing safeguards to create safer and more equitable professional environments for women across KP.
Healthcare infrastructure development received further attention with the approval to establish breast screening centers in five divisional headquarters. This initiative is expected to facilitate early detection and treatment of breast cancer, significantly improving health outcomes for women. Additionally, the government sanctioned the transfer of 15 kanals of land in Upper Chitral to the Health Department, earmarked for constructing a nursing college, which will contribute to building a skilled healthcare workforce in the region.
Infrastructure projects also saw considerable progress, with the cabinet approving an increase in the budget for the Lakki Marwat Women and Children Hospital, ensuring the facility can meet growing healthcare demands. Moreover, land was allocated for a Ladies and Children Park along Kohat Road in Peshawar, reflecting a focus on community well-being and recreational spaces.
Significant approvals were made regarding transportation and judicial infrastructure as well. The cabinet sanctioned the land acquisition costs necessary for the Peshawar–Dera Ismail Khan Motorway project, a vital corridor expected to enhance connectivity and economic activity. Additionally, 29 kanals and 9 marlas of government land were transferred to facilitate the expansion of the Hangu Judicial Complex, aiming to improve the administration of justice in the district.
Addressing humanitarian needs, the cabinet approved a financial assistance package for 6,505 families affected in the Tirah region under the Tirah Model in Khyber district. This support is part of ongoing efforts to provide relief and rehabilitation to communities impacted by conflict and displacement.
Lastly, the cabinet endorsed the nomination of a private sector representative to the Private Power and Infrastructure Board, signaling a collaborative approach between government and private entities to advance infrastructure development and energy projects in KP.
Collectively, these decisions reflect a comprehensive strategy by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to strengthen public services, enhance healthcare capacity, promote social welfare, and accelerate infrastructure development, all aimed at improving the quality of life for residents across the province.
