How to Secure Your Motorcycle M-Tag in Islamabad Before February 28, 2026: Fees and Locations Exp…

The Islamabad Capital Territory administration has introduced a new regulation requiring every motorcycle operating within the city limits to be equipped with an M-Tag, an electronic identification sticker. This initiative aims to enhance traffic management and improve law enforcement efficiency across the capital. The deadline for all motorcycle owners to have their M-Tags installed is set for February 28, 2026.

Starting from March 1, 2026, the traffic police will strictly enforce this rule. Any motorcycle found without a valid M-Tag will be stopped, impounded, and taken to the nearest police station. Owners will then have to pay a fine in addition to the cost of installing the tag before their vehicle is released. It is important to note that this mandate applies universally, covering not only regular motorcycles but also heavy bikes and those used by ride-hailing services such as Bykea and InDrive, with no exceptions granted.

For those looking to obtain their M-Tag, the process has been streamlined to make it as convenient as possible. Motorcycle owners need to bring their original Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC), the motorcycle’s registration book or card, and the bike itself for the installation procedure. The entire process is designed to be quick and efficient, with a nominal fee of Rs. 250 charged for the service. Once processed, the electronic sticker is affixed to the front part of the bike, typically on the speedometer or another flat, visible surface to ensure easy scanning by traffic authorities.

To facilitate smooth access, authorities have established 13 dedicated registration points throughout Islamabad. These include strategically located counters at major toll plazas such as 26 Number Chungi and 17 Meel, both of which operate 24 hours a day to accommodate late-night and early-morning applicants. Additionally, urban centers like Sector I-8, F-9 Park, Kachnar Park, and Gulberg have been designated as registration hubs. Most of these centers remain open from 10:00 AM until midnight and continue operations on weekends and public holidays until the deadline.

Due to high demand, some locations experience significant queues, particularly during peak hours. For instance, centers in Gulberg and Sector I-9 can see waiting times stretching between 60 to 90 minutes. To avoid long delays, it is advisable for bike owners to visit the 24-hour counters at toll plazas during off-peak hours, such as late at night or early in the morning. Planning ahead will help riders complete the process smoothly and avoid last-minute rushes.

In summary, Islamabad’s new M-Tag requirement is a crucial step towards modernizing traffic oversight and enhancing road safety. Motorcyclists are strongly encouraged to complete their M-Tag installation well before the February 28, 2026 deadline to prevent fines and ensure uninterrupted travel within the capital. Taking timely action will not only save money but also contribute to a more organized and secure traffic environment for all road users.
