Maryam Nawaz to Launch Punjab’s Inaugural E-Taxi Program Promoting Green Transport

In a landmark move towards sustainable urban mobility, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is set to officially launch the province’s very first electric taxi (e-taxi) scheme today. This initiative represents a major stride in promoting eco-friendly transportation options across Punjab, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and modernize the public transport sector.

The initial phase of the program will see the distribution of 1,100 electric vehicles to drivers, with a special focus on inclusivity and gender representation. Notably, the scheme has allocated a 30 percent quota exclusively for female drivers, reflecting the government’s commitment to empowering women within the transport industry. To make female-driven vehicles easily recognizable, these e-taxis will sport a unique color scheme distinct from their male-driven counterparts.

Financially, the Punjab government is providing substantial support to encourage participation. Male drivers will receive a subsidy covering 50 percent of the vehicle’s down payment, while female drivers will benefit from an even higher subsidy of 60 percent. Beyond this, the government will also shoulder the expenses related to vehicle registration, mandatory fitness tests, and token tax fees. The remaining balance of the vehicle cost will be payable by the drivers in manageable installments spread over a five-year period, making the scheme accessible to a wider range of applicants.

Safety and convenience are key pillars of this initiative. Each e-taxi will be equipped with a panic button directly connected to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, ensuring immediate assistance in emergencies for both drivers and passengers. Furthermore, these vehicles will be integrated with popular ride-hailing platforms such as inDrive and Yango, facilitating easy booking and increasing the scheme’s reach among urban commuters.

To address the practical challenges of electric vehicle usage, the government plans to install fast-charging stations at strategic public locations throughout Punjab. This infrastructure development is crucial to support the smooth operation of the e-taxi fleet and encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles in the future. Additionally, digital payment systems will be incorporated into the service, promoting transparency and ease of transactions for users.

This pioneering e-taxi scheme not only aligns with global trends towards green energy but also reflects Punjab’s proactive approach to tackling environmental concerns while fostering economic opportunities for its citizens. As the program rolls out, it is expected to set a benchmark for other provinces and pave the way for a cleaner, more sustainable transport ecosystem in Pakistan.
