Sindh Education Boards Halt Exams During Holi and Easter to Support Minorities

In a significant move aimed at fostering religious tolerance and accommodating the needs of minority communities, the Sindh Minister for Universities and Boards, Ismail Rahu, announced on Monday that all education boards in the province have been instructed to avoid scheduling examinations during the Holi and Easter festivals. This directive reflects the provincial government’s commitment to promoting interfaith harmony and ensuring that students and educators from minority backgrounds can observe their religious celebrations without academic pressure.

The minister clarified that no exams will be held between April 2 and April 6, coinciding with the Easter holiday period. Any exams that were previously postponed or newly arranged will now be rescheduled to commence from April 7 onward. This adjustment is designed to ease the burden on minority students and teachers, allowing them to participate fully in their cultural and religious festivities without the added stress of examinations.

This decision was taken following a formal request submitted by the principal of St Patrick High School in Karachi, highlighting the concerns of minority communities regarding exam schedules overlapping with important religious events. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah personally endorsed the application and instructed the education boards to revise their timetables accordingly. The chief minister emphasized the importance of respecting the religious observances of all communities within the province, underscoring the government’s inclusive approach.

Education boards that had already published their examination schedules have been directed to promptly update and reissue revised timetables reflecting this change. Furthermore, the chairpersons of all boards are required to ensure strict compliance with this directive and submit detailed reports to the relevant department confirming implementation. This measure not only demonstrates administrative responsiveness but also signals a broader commitment to protecting minority rights within the educational framework.

Officials involved in the process highlighted that this initiative is part of a wider effort to cultivate an environment of mutual respect and understanding among diverse religious groups in Sindh. By aligning academic activities with cultural sensitivities, the government aims to create a more inclusive atmosphere in schools and colleges, where students from all backgrounds feel valued and supported during their significant religious occasions.
