The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a warning on Monday about a severe heatwave affecting most parts of the country. Temperatures in many plain areas are anticipated to climb as high as 46 degrees Celsius (114.8°F) before any relief arrives later this week.
Extreme heat and dry weather conditions are expected to dominate the southern and central plains, including cities such as Peshawar, along with the districts of Mardan, Swabi, Charsadda, and Dera Ismail Khan. This intense heatwave will also persist in the federal capital Islamabad, northern Punjab, and Sindh province, covering urban centers like Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Larkana until at least June 10.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and PMD forecast a notable change in weather starting June 11. Heavy thundershowers are anticipated to provide relief from the heat in northern and western regions of the country.
While the plains continue to endure scorching temperatures, isolated upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Swat, Dir, and Chitral, are expected to receive localized thundershowers on Monday.
In a significant development, a broader rain-bearing system is predicted to enter Pakistan on June 11 and 12. This weather system is likely to bring much-needed rainfall and thunderstorms to Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and other northern districts of Punjab.
During the same period, precipitation is expected in several Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts such as Peshawar, Swat, Chitral, Mansehra, and Abbottabad, as well as the Zhob and Musakhel districts in southwestern Balochistan.
Additionally, the PMD indicated that a fresh spell of rain will likely begin in the northern territories of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir starting June 12, marking a welcome break from the ongoing heatwave.
