Karachi to Enforce Designated Lanes for Motorbikes, Buses, Rickshaws on Sharea Faisal

Karachi Traffic Police have announced a new traffic management plan requiring motorbikes, buses, and rickshaws to use designated lanes on Sharea Faisal, one of the city’s busiest roads. Those who violate the lane rules will face fines as part of this initiative aimed at improving traffic flow and discipline.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah revealed that the plan will initially be rolled out on Sharea Faisal, where the necessary enforcement infrastructure, including a network of surveillance cameras, is already operational. A one-month awareness campaign will precede the formal enforcement starting June 1, allowing commuters to adjust to the new regulations.

Under the new system, motorbikes, buses, rickshaws, and other light transport vehicles such as Mazdas must use the two leftmost lanes. The remaining two to three lanes, depending on the section of the road, will be reserved for faster-moving vehicles like cars and double-cabin pickups.

Enforcement will be supported by the existing camera network, which will automatically issue electronic tickets to offenders. Fines have been set vehicle type, with motorbikes and rickshaws fined Rs2,500 and buses Rs7,500 for violations.

In a significant development, this initiative marks the first structured attempt to introduce lane discipline on Karachi’s roads, aiming to streamline traffic and reduce congestion on Sharea Faisal.
