Sony has officially announced an R-rated animated film adaptation of Bloodborne, committing fully to the game’s dark and violent atmosphere. The confirmation came during CinemaCon, where Sony Pictures executive Sanford Panitch emphasized that the movie will remain “very true” to the brutal and gothic tone that defines the original game.
Developed by FromSoftware, Bloodborne centers on a solitary traveler navigating a twisted, nightmarish city teeming with monstrous creatures. The R-rating indicates that the film will embrace the graphic horror and gore that contributed to the game’s cult status, promising a bold and unflinching portrayal of its world.
In a significant development, Sony is expanding its portfolio of video game adaptations amid the growing success of the genre at the box office. Recent hits such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie and A Minecraft Movie have demonstrated the lucrative potential of gaming franchises in cinemas.
Alongside Bloodborne, Sony is also working on adaptations of Helldivers, directed by Justin Lin and starring Jason Momoa, as well as a live-action The Legend of Zelda film helmed by Wes Ball.
Notably, the Bloodborne film will be co-produced by PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation, and popular YouTuber Jacksepticeye, who has cultivated a large fanbase through his long-standing connection to the game. Lyrical Media is partnering with Sony Pictures to co-finance the project.
While details such as casting and release date have yet to be revealed, the announcement has already sparked excitement among fans eager to see the haunting world of Bloodborne vividly brought to life on screen.
