The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has officially extended the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program duration from four to five years across all dental colleges in Punjab. This change aligns the curriculum with international dental education standards.
A formal notification from UHS confirmed that the new five-year integrated BDS curriculum will be implemented starting from the 2025–26 academic session. The revised program strictly follows the guidelines established by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC).
Notably, this adjustment brings Punjab’s dental education framework in line with global practices, as most countries require a five-year degree for dentistry. The extension aims to enhance the international recognition and acceptance of Pakistani dental degrees, facilitating graduates’ access to global career opportunities.
The updated curriculum emphasizes greater clinical training, the use of modern simulation laboratories, and advanced medical research components. UHS Vice Chancellor Professor Ahsan Waheed Rathore highlighted the importance of aligning dental education with global benchmarks, stating that the comprehensive five-year structure will better prepare students to pass international licensing exams and practice dentistry abroad effectively.
Meanwhile, to support existing dental professionals and alumni who completed the four-year program, UHS announced a bridging program. This initiative will enable past graduates to upgrade their qualifications, ensuring they meet the standards of the new five-year degree.
