Kroger has initiated a voluntary recall of certain batches of its Homestyle Cheese Garlic Croutons after concerns arose about possible salmonella contamination. The recall was issued by Sugar Foods LLC, the manufacturer, following identification of a milk powder ingredient in the seasoning blend that may be contaminated.
The affected product is packaged in 5-ounce pouches bearing the UPC code 0 11110 81353 4. The recall covers items with “best if used by” dates ranging from February 17 to April 7, 2027. These croutons were distributed to Kroger stores across 17 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, between March 7 and April 7, 2026.
This issue stems from a wider recall involving California Dairies Inc., whose dry milk powder was supplied to Solina USA, the seasoning provider for the croutons. Although the seasoning batches tested negative for salmonella prior to use, the recall was implemented as a precautionary measure to ensure consumer safety.
No cases of illness have been linked to the recalled croutons so far. However, consumers who possess the affected product are strongly advised not to consume it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that salmonella infection symptoms may include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting, typically manifesting between six hours and six days after exposure. Vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems may experience more severe symptoms.
