Hayden Panettiere, the American actress who gained fame as a child star and later captivated audiences with her roles in the TV series Heroes and Nashville, has died at the age of 36, her father confirmed in a statement. Skip Panettiere described his daughter as “an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her, and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” requesting privacy as the family grieves her loss. The cause and manner of her death have not been revealed.
Her career spanned more than three decades, beginning at the age of four when she was cast in the soap opera One Life to Live. At nine, she made her film debut as the voice of Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life. She also appeared alongside Denzel Washington in the 2000 film Remember the Titans. Panettiere starred in comedies such as Raising Helen and Bring It On: All or Nothing, the latter becoming a beloved film for many viewers who grew up watching it.
Her most notable role was as Claire Bennet, a cheerleader with regenerative superpowers, in the NBC sci-fi drama Heroes, which aired from 2006 to 2010. Later, she earned two consecutive Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of an ambitious country singer in Nashville, a role that also saw her music chart on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs list. She further appeared in the Scream franchise, playing Kirby Reed in Scream 4 and returning as an FBI agent in Scream VI.
Panettiere was open about her personal struggles. Earlier this year, she published a memoir titled This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she candidly discussed her experiences growing up as a child actor, battles with addiction, abuse, postpartum depression, and the tragic loss of her younger brother, Jansen, who died in 2023 at the age of 28 due to a heart condition. She shared custody of her daughter, Kaya, born in 2014, with her former partner, Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko. In 2018, she gave him full custody while she sought treatment, addressing public misconceptions about her relationship with her daughter.
In a significant development, many in the entertainment industry viewed the release of her memoir and subsequent press tour as the beginning of a career resurgence, making the news of her passing particularly shocking to those close to her.
Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment world, including from actresses Selma Blair and Beverley Mitchell, Scream VI co-star Melissa Barrera, singer JoJo, TV host Rosie O’Donnell, and the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA, of which Panettiere had been a member since 1994. Fans have also responded to her final Instagram post, shared just weeks before her death, with heartfelt messages reflecting on her impact during their childhoods.
