Brendan Fraser and the creative team behind the upcoming sequel to The Mummy have begun promoting the film with a visit to a themed attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood. Fraser, reprising his role as Rick O’Connell, was accompanied by directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, collectively known as Radio Silence, as they experienced The Mummy rollercoaster.
The fourth installment in the franchise is slated for a theatrical release on May 19, 2028. Universal Studios shared a photo from the visit, highlighting Fraser’s enthusiasm as he prepared to return to his iconic character by braving Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride.
Filming for the new movie is set to commence this summer. Although specific plot details have not been revealed, the film will continue the storyline from the original series that began with The Mummy in 1999 and its sequel, The Mummy Returns, in 2001.
Notably, Fraser is expected to reunite with Rachel Weisz, who will reprise her role as Evelyn O’Connell, along with John Hannah returning as Jonathan Carnahan. The screenplay is being penned by David Coggeshall, known for his work on Orphan: First Kill.
The directors have clarified that this new film will not follow the events of the 2008 installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, citing Weisz’s absence from that movie as a significant reason for this decision.
In a significant development, the project may face box office competition from another film titled The Mummy, directed by Lee Cronin. This separate production reportedly centers on a darker narrative involving a family and their missing child, and Brendan Fraser is not involved in that version.
