The United Arab Emirates has announced plans to develop a dedicated defence industrial free zone in Abu Dhabi, marking a crucial step toward achieving military self-sufficiency and diversifying its industrial base. This new facility will be situated in Al Selmiyyah and is the outcome of a strategic collaboration between the Tawazun Council, responsible for defence procurement and industry growth, and the AD Ports Group.
The initiative aims to establish a world-class environment for global defence manufacturers, providing a streamlined platform for producing advanced military equipment within the UAE. By combining state-of-the-art infrastructure with a competitive regulatory framework, the project seeks to attract international original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to operate locally.
In a significant development, this zone is expected to facilitate substantial knowledge transfer, generate high-skilled employment opportunities for Emirati nationals, and integrate domestic suppliers into the global defence supply chain.
The operational structure of the Al Selmiyyah zone is based on a clear division of responsibilities. The Tawazun Council will act as the primary regulatory authority, overseeing licensing, compliance, and ensuring all activities meet the UAE’s national security requirements and international commitments. This oversight guarantees a secure environment for the development of sensitive technologies.
Meanwhile, the AD Ports Group will utilize its expertise in logistics to manage master planning and infrastructure development. By offering cutting-edge facilities and seamless connectivity to global trade routes through Abu Dhabi’s extensive port network, the zone will provide manufacturers with exceptional logistical advantages to access markets across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
This initiative arrives amid shifting security dynamics in the Middle East, where regional powers are increasingly focused on reducing dependence on foreign defence imports. The UAE’s investment in the Al Selmiyyah zone reflects a broader Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) trend toward localisation of defence manufacturing. Producing critical systems domestically will enhance the UAE’s military readiness and ensure supply chain stability during global disruptions.
Furthermore, the project supports the UAE’s national strategy, known as “Operation 300bn,” which aims to boost the industrial sector’s contribution to the country’s GDP. As the UAE transitions away from oil reliance, the defence industry is becoming a pivotal element of its knowledge-based economy. The new free zone thus represents not only a strategic asset for national security but also a significant driver of future economic growth.
