Kuwait Introduces Temporary Subsidy to Stabilize Essential Goods Prices

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry in Kuwait has introduced a temporary subsidy on essential commodities to maintain price stability and secure a consistent supply of vital goods amid ongoing global market disruptions. This initiative aims to shield consumers from escalating costs caused by supply chain difficulties while assisting importers in managing increased expenses.

Marwa Al-Jaidan, Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry, stated that the subsidy is effective immediately and will continue until June 30, with the possibility of extension depending on evolving circumstances. This move forms part of broader efforts to bolster food security and uphold market stability during current challenges.

Regarding the products covered, Al-Jaidan highlighted that certain items such as long-life milk and eggs are locally produced, with manufacturers benefiting from feed support programs coordinated with relevant authorities. She also noted that the ministry retains the flexibility to expand the subsidy list to include other goods like meat, particularly if global supply issues impact their availability.

Since the onset of the crisis, the ministry has intensified field inspections by deploying teams to monitor pricing and product availability, ensuring that companies receiving subsidies comply with the program’s conditions. Al-Jaidan warned that any company found violating regulations will face stringent penalties, including full reimbursement of the subsidy and exclusion from future subsidy initiatives.
