Baku to Host 13th World Urban Forum in 2026, Spotlight on Housing and Climate Resilience

The vibrant city of Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, has been selected to host the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13), scheduled to take place from May 17 to May 22, 2026. This prestigious international event gathers a diverse group of stakeholders, including global leaders, urban planners, policymakers, and experts, all united by the common goal of addressing pressing challenges in urban development. The forum will place particular emphasis on critical themes such as housing accessibility and climate resilience, which have become increasingly urgent in today’s rapidly urbanizing world.

Renowned for its striking blend of contemporary architecture and rich historical heritage, Baku offers a unique setting along the Caspian Sea for this global gathering. The city’s rapid transformation over recent decades exemplifies how urban planning can successfully merge innovation with tradition. This backdrop will serve as an inspiring example as participants explore the future of cities amid mounting pressures from population growth, environmental changes, and social inequalities.

The timing of WUF13 is especially significant given the widespread housing crises faced by millions worldwide. Many urban areas continue to grapple with shortages of affordable housing, the proliferation of informal settlements, and heightened risks posed by climate change. Against this backdrop, the forum aims to foster comprehensive discussions around three pivotal issues. First, it will advocate for recognizing adequate housing as an essential human right and a fundamental element of social justice. Second, it will focus on building resilient communities capable of withstanding economic shocks, environmental disasters, and rapid demographic shifts. Third, the forum will explore strategies for sustainable urban growth that prioritize inclusivity and environmental stewardship, ensuring cities meet the diverse needs of their inhabitants.

Organizers anticipate that WUF13 will draw over 15,000 participants representing more than 170 countries, making it one of the largest global platforms dedicated to urban development. This congregation of minds will provide governments, civil society, and international organizations with a critical opportunity to set ambitious agendas and share best practices. The ultimate objective remains clear: to promote secure, sustainable housing solutions and foster resilient urban environments that can thrive in the face of future challenges.

As the world continues to urbanize at an unprecedented pace, forums like WUF13 play a vital role in shaping policies that balance growth with equity and environmental responsibility. Baku’s selection as the host city not only highlights its own urban achievements but also signals a commitment to advancing global conversations on building cities that are both livable and sustainable for generations to come.
