Ayaz Shaukat Named Inaugural Chairman of Pakistan’s Social Media Regulatory Authority

In a significant development aimed at regulating digital platforms, senior lawyer Ayaz Shaukat has been appointed as the inaugural chairman of Pakistan’s newly established Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority. This appointment marks a crucial step in the government’s efforts to monitor and manage the rapidly expanding social media landscape within the country.

The Ministry of Interior formalized this decision on Thursday by issuing an official notification that not only confirmed Shaukat’s role as chairman but also announced the induction of five additional members to the Authority. These members include well-known figures such as senior journalist Sohail Iqbal Bhatti, along with Adnan Khan, Muhammad Salman Zafar, Fahad Malik, and Saad Ali. All appointees will serve a term of five years, during which they will be responsible for overseeing the Authority’s mandate and operations.

Currently, Ayaz Shaukat holds the position of Advocate General in Islamabad, where he has garnered respect for his legal expertise and commitment to justice. He is expected to officially assume his new responsibilities as chairman of the Social Media Authority following the Eid holidays. His leadership is anticipated to bring a structured approach to tackling the challenges posed by misinformation and harmful content circulating on social media platforms.

The newly formed Authority is empowered to address complaints related to fake news and false information disseminated online. Individuals who believe they have been adversely affected by such content will be able to file complaints directly with the Authority. Importantly, the body is mandated to respond swiftly, issuing directives within 24 hours of receiving a complaint. This rapid response mechanism aims to curb the spread of misleading information and protect the public from potential harm.

Moreover, the Authority holds the authority to block or remove content deemed inappropriate or harmful, thereby playing a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of information shared on social media platforms. This regulatory framework reflects the government’s increasing focus on digital governance and the need to balance freedom of expression with responsible online conduct.

As Pakistan continues to witness a surge in internet usage and social media engagement, the establishment of this Authority represents a proactive measure to safeguard users and promote a healthier digital environment. The appointments signal the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s approach to managing the complex dynamics of social media.
