Pakistan Offers Condolences and Support to Ethiopia Amid Devastating Flood Crisis

The Government of Pakistan has conveyed its deepest condolences and sincere sympathies to the people and authorities of Ethiopia in the wake of the recent catastrophic floods and landslides that have caused significant loss of life and widespread destruction. This tragic event has left communities in southern Ethiopia grappling with immense hardship and devastation.

In an official statement issued by Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the country expressed profound sorrow over the escalating death toll in Ethiopia’s Gamo Zone, where relentless heavy rains triggered massive mudslides. These landslides have tragically buried entire villages, leaving many families mourning the loss of loved ones and struggling to rebuild their shattered lives.

“Our hearts go out to the families who have lost their dear ones and to those whose homes and livelihoods have been swept away by this natural disaster,” the statement emphasized. Pakistan reaffirmed its unwavering solidarity with its Ethiopian counterparts, describing the bond between the two nations as one of brotherhood and mutual support during these trying times.

The disaster, which struck earlier this month, has so far claimed at least 80 lives, with the death toll expected to rise as rescue teams continue their efforts in the remote, mud-blocked areas. Thousands of people have been displaced, forced to seek shelter elsewhere as vital infrastructure such as roads and bridges have been destroyed or severely damaged. The Ethiopian government has declared a national mourning period, underscoring the gravity of the situation as emergency responders race against time to reach isolated communities cut off by floodwaters.

In light of the unfolding humanitarian crisis, Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to support Ethiopia’s relief and recovery operations. This pledge comes amid a backdrop of growing diplomatic ties and environmental cooperation between Islamabad and Addis Ababa. Both nations have recently engaged in joint initiatives aimed at enhancing climate resilience, recognizing their shared vulnerability to the adverse effects of global climate change.

Officials in Pakistan have maintained close communication with Ethiopian authorities to assess the specific needs on the ground and to coordinate potential assistance. This proactive approach highlights Pakistan’s readiness to contribute resources and expertise to help restore affected areas and support displaced populations during the recovery phase.

As Ethiopia continues to confront the aftermath of this devastating natural calamity, Pakistan’s gesture of solidarity serves as a reminder of the importance of international cooperation in addressing the challenges posed by climate-induced disasters. The two countries’ ongoing partnership reflects a mutual understanding of the urgent need to build resilience and safeguard vulnerable communities from future environmental shocks.
