In a significant move to bolster law enforcement capabilities in Punjab, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced the transformation of the Crime Control Department (CCD) into the province’s foremost investigative agency. This strategic upgrade aims to enhance the effectiveness of crime detection and prevention, while restoring public confidence in the justice system.
The CM outlined a comprehensive plan to expand the CCD’s operational scope, drawing inspiration from five of the world’s most advanced crime control organizations. This initiative will see the integration of cutting-edge forensic methodologies, sophisticated investigative techniques, and the deployment of modern technology, including artificial intelligence-driven surveillance software. These advancements are expected to revolutionize the way criminal activities are tracked and analyzed across Punjab.
To support these enhancements, the government will equip the CCD with specialized machinery and state-of-the-art equipment designed to monitor and apprehend offenders more efficiently. The department’s central headquarters will undergo a major overhaul, incorporating the latest facilities to support high-tech investigations and intelligence gathering. This modernization effort reflects the CM’s commitment to creating a robust infrastructure capable of addressing complex criminal challenges.
Moreover, the CM revealed plans to establish new CCD offices, police stations, and residential quarters in every division, district, and tehsil throughout Punjab. This expansion aims to decentralize operations, ensuring quicker response times and stronger local presence. Following the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, the government intends to launch a province-wide campaign targeting the possession and use of illegal firearms, a move expected to further reduce violent crime rates.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif also highlighted the tangible impact of the CCD’s recent efforts, noting a marked decline in various crime categories. Homicide rates and offenses against women have notably decreased, while robberies have fallen by an impressive 77 percent. Incidents of mobile and bag snatching have dropped by nearly half, vehicle thefts by 17 percent, attempted murders by 31 percent, and kidnappings for ransom have been reduced by 45 percent compared to the previous year. These statistics underscore the effectiveness of the department’s ongoing initiatives.
In addition to these measures, the CM announced the introduction of new legislation aimed at curbing the illegal arms trade within the province. The CCD has also been assigned the critical responsibility of addressing acid attack cases, a heinous crime that has drawn widespread condemnation. To further strengthen investigative capabilities, a modern criminal research and investigation center will be established within the department, serving as a hub for advanced crime analysis and training.
These reforms reflect a broader commitment by the Punjab government to enhance public safety and ensure justice through innovation and dedicated law enforcement.
