How the U.S.–Iran AI-Driven Conflict Impacts Pakistan’s Strategic Landscape

The ongoing military confrontation led by the United States against Iran has now entered its second week, highlighting the profound transformation that emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, are bringing to the nature of warfare. In the initial stages of this conflict, American and Israeli forces launched an unprecedented barrage of strikes, reportedly targeting close to 1,000 locations within the first 24 hours alone. This rapid and extensive offensive marks a new chapter in combat operations, driven not just by advanced weaponry but by the integration of sophisticated generative AI systems into the core of military decision-making and targeting processes.

Central to this technological leap is the Palantir Maven Smart System, a platform that amalgamates intelligence gathered from a variety of sources including satellites, unmanned aerial vehicles, intercepted communications, and other classified inputs. At the heart of this system lies Anthropics Claude, a large language model designed to analyze vast amounts of data and generate actionable insights. This AI model has been instrumental in compiling prioritized target lists, assigning precise geographic coordinates, and optimizing mission priorities based on strategic value. Furthermore, it provides near real-time assessments following strikes, allowing commanders to adapt tactics swiftly in response to battlefield developments.

Iran’s capacity to mount an effective counter-response is severely constrained by the sheer speed at which these AI-driven operations unfold. What once required weeks of careful planning and deliberation is now compressed into mere hours or even minutes, fundamentally altering the tempo of conflict. This marks one of the earliest and most significant instances where generative AI has been deployed to directly influence kinetic military actions in a major interstate confrontation, setting a precedent for future warfare.

Previously, AI applications in military contexts were largely confined to supporting roles such as intelligence analysis, logistical planning, counterterrorism operations, and even covert missions like the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January 2026. However, the current campaign under U.S. Central Command has expanded AI’s role into active combat decision-making, underscoring a dramatic shift in how wars are fought and managed.

Amid this technological evolution, a notable paradox has emerged. Despite President Trump’s directive to federal agencies to phase out the use of Anthropics tools within six months—a decision made after negotiations with the company collapsed just before the conflict intensified—the Pentagon continues to rely on the Maven Claude integration in ongoing operations. The military leadership views an abrupt cessation as impractical, given the system’s critical role on the battlefield. Contingency plans are reportedly being considered, including the invocation of emergency powers to maintain access to these AI capabilities until alternative solutions from providers such as OpenAI or xAI can be deployed.

This unfolding situation carries several important implications for Pakistan. Firstly, it accelerates the compression of strategic decision-making timelines during crises. The ability to fuse intelligence from multiple domains and generate targeting packages at machine speed significantly widens capability gaps in South Asia, a region already fraught with nuclear thresholds and rapid mobilization risks that define deterrence dynamics. The potential for unintended escalation grows if adversaries equipped with similar AI tools can close perceived windows of vulnerability faster than diplomatic channels or conventional military responses can react.

Secondly, the dispute between the U.S. government and AI vendors highlights the vulnerabilities associated with reliance on foreign commercial AI ecosystems for critical defense applications. Ethical safeguards implemented by private companies tend to weaken once a technology becomes indispensable for military missions, as states may resort to coercion or alternative providers to bypass restrictions. Pakistan, well aware of these strategic challenges, has proactively invested in indigenous AI capabilities tailored for defense purposes. These efforts focus on intelligence analysis, predictive modeling, and decision support systems that maintain strict human oversight to mitigate risks associated with AI biases and errors.

While generative AI accelerates operational tempo, Pakistan emphasizes the necessity of preserving meaningful human control over targeting decisions to ensure compliance with humanitarian law and prevent unintended harm. The country is actively engaged in shaping international norms to safeguard human authority over lethal force, reflecting a commitment to responsible AI use in military contexts.

Domestically, the ongoing conflict in the Gulf region has heightened concerns over energy security and economic stability. Islamabad’s diplomatic approach, which carefully condemns the strikes while urging de-escalation, illustrates the delicate balancing act of protecting national interests, maintaining territorial integrity, and preserving strategic ties with Washington. This nuanced stance is the result of long-term strategic foresight and sustained investments in AI preparedness, positioning Pakistan to navigate the complex geopolitical landscape shaped by the advent of AI-driven warfare.
