Punjab Government Imposes Seven-Day Extension of Section 144 Amid Heightened Security Alerts

The Punjab government has announced a continuation of the restrictions under Section 144 throughout the province for an additional seven days. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to curb public gatherings, rallies, and demonstrations that could potentially compromise security. The extension was formalized through an official notification released by the Punjab Home Department, emphasizing the critical need to maintain stability amid growing concerns.

The decision to prolong these restrictions stems from intelligence assessments highlighting the risk of terrorist activities targeting large crowds. Authorities have expressed apprehension that mass assemblies, especially those deemed sensitive, could be exploited by extremist elements to carry out attacks. In response, the government has taken proactive measures aimed at safeguarding citizens and preserving peace across the region.

Officials within the Home Department clarified that the primary objective behind enforcing Section 144 is to prevent any incidents that might disrupt public order or incite violence. Under the current directive, organizing or participating in public meetings, processions, or demonstrations in open spaces is strictly prohibited unless prior authorization is obtained from the relevant authorities. This precautionary step is designed to minimize risks associated with uncontrolled gatherings.

Moreover, the notification explicitly bans the carrying or display of weapons throughout Punjab during this period, a move intended to further reduce the chances of violent confrontations. However, exemptions have been made for law enforcement officers who are performing their official duties, ensuring that security operations can continue unhindered. It is important to note that the restrictions do not extend to private events such as wedding ceremonies, funeral processions, or judicial proceedings, which will proceed without interruption.

District administrations and police departments across Punjab have been directed to enforce these orders rigorously, with an emphasis on ensuring full compliance at all levels. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation to respond swiftly to any violations or emerging threats. This extension of Section 144 reflects the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order during a period marked by heightened security challenges.
