SZA Reveals How Healing at Indian Ashram Transformed Her Recovery Journey

SZA, the acclaimed singer known for her soulful voice and introspective lyrics, has recently opened up about a deeply personal chapter in her life involving a painful injury and the unexpected path to healing she discovered. Last year, just before celebrating her 36th birthday on November 8, she suffered a serious injury that left her largely immobilized and struggling with daily movements. The injury involved herniated discs in her neck, specifically affecting the C5 and C6 vertebrae, which made even simple actions like turning her head or sitting comfortably a significant challenge.

Describing herself as a “happily clumsy person,” SZA acknowledged how this sudden physical setback forced her to drastically slow down and reevaluate her lifestyle. The injury not only impacted her physically but also took a toll on her mental well-being, prompting her to seek a holistic approach to recovery. In search of both physical relief and emotional balance, she chose to immerse herself in the serene environment of the Isha Foundation, a renowned spiritual retreat and ashram located in India. This center is widely respected for its comprehensive yoga and meditation programs, which attract individuals looking for healing and inner peace.

During her month-long stay at the ashram, SZA dedicated herself to learning and practicing various techniques, including Shambhavi Mahamudra, a meditative practice centered on controlled breathing and heightened mindfulness. This routine was instrumental in helping her manage the stress and frustration that accompanied her recovery process. Despite arriving at the retreat with a debilitating injury, she described the experience as transformative, turning what could have been a bleak birthday into one of profound significance. She reflected on the moment as an opportunity to “get real” with herself, stepping away from the constant pressures and disappointments she had been facing.

Her time at the ashram came at a pivotal moment in her career as well. It was sandwiched between major professional milestones, including the premiere of her upcoming 2025 comedy film “One of Them Days,” in which she stars alongside Keke Palmer, and her rehearsals for the highly anticipated Super Bowl halftime show where she performed with Kendrick Lamar. This period of retreat and reflection allowed her to recharge and find emotional stability amid the whirlwind of her professional commitments.

After her Super Bowl performance, SZA chose to return to the Isha Foundation, continuing the practices that had proven so beneficial during her initial recovery. This ongoing commitment to yoga and meditation highlights how the spiritual journey she embarked on has become an integral part of her life, helping her maintain balance and resilience both on and off the stage. Her story sheds light on the powerful role that mindfulness and holistic healing can play in overcoming physical and emotional challenges.
