In a critical security operation on Friday, law enforcement officials in Bannu managed to prevent a potentially devastating terror attack by safely defusing three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted in strategic locations. The devices were discovered near a bridge on the Bannu–Miranshah Road and within a bustling local market, areas that could have caused extensive casualties and damage had the explosives detonated.
The district police revealed that two of the IEDs, each containing more than 140 kilograms of explosives, were found in the jurisdiction of Baka Khel police station. Meanwhile, a third device weighing approximately eight kilograms was located in the area covered by Kaki police station. These explosives posed a severe threat to the safety of civilians and infrastructure, highlighting the importance of the swift and coordinated response by the security forces.
Acting promptly on actionable intelligence received early in the morning, specialized teams led by the Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs) and the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) in Bannu were deployed. The operation was conducted under the direct oversight of the District Police Officer (DPO) of Bannu, involving a combined effort from the district police, Rapid Response Force (RRF), CTD units from Swat, and the Bomb Disposal Squad. This multi-agency collaboration was crucial in handling the complex threat posed by the explosives.
During the drone-assisted surveillance of the area, three suspects were spotted attempting to remotely trigger the devices. These individuals opened fire on the police personnel, leading to a brief but intense exchange of gunfire. Despite the confrontation, the suspects managed to flee into the surrounding bushes, evading immediate capture. However, the security forces maintained control of the scene and focused on neutralizing the threat posed by the bombs.
The Bomb Disposal Squad successfully carried out the delicate task of defusing the explosives, thereby averting what could have been a catastrophic incident. Their expertise and courage ensured that no harm came to the local population or property. The operation has been hailed as a significant achievement in the ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security in the region.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Zulfiqar Hameed, publicly commended the Bannu police for their dedication and professionalism in handling the situation. He announced a reward to recognize the bravery and efficiency of the team involved in the operation. Similarly, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Bannu region praised the intelligence-driven approach and the seamless coordination among various security agencies that led to the successful prevention of the terror plot.
This incident underscores the persistent threat posed by militant groups in the area and the critical role of intelligence and rapid response in counterterrorism efforts. The authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement to ensure the safety and stability of the region.
