Islamabad Authorities Shut Multiple Roads to Red Zone Ahead of Large-Scale Protests

In anticipation of significant protests by religious groups, Islamabad authorities have implemented stringent traffic restrictions by closing multiple roads leading to the city’s sensitive Red Zone. This precautionary measure was enforced on Friday to maintain law and order and ensure public safety during the expected demonstrations. The Red Zone, which houses important government buildings and diplomatic missions, is often a focal point for political and social protests, prompting heightened security protocols.

Despite the closures, officials have kept Margalla Road and the route passing by the Islamabad Marriott Hotel open to allow limited access into the Red Zone. These corridors are being closely monitored to manage the flow of authorized vehicles and personnel. However, all other entry points to the area have been sealed off to prevent large crowds from converging and potentially disrupting the peace. The police have also blocked traffic heading towards China Chowk via Fazal-e-Haq Road, further restricting movement in key areas around the Red Zone.

To assist commuters in navigating these restrictions, authorities have issued detailed traffic advisories recommending alternative routes. Motorists traveling from Polyclinic towards Lal Quarter Chowk are being redirected through Luqman Hakim Road, while Saddar Road has been suggested as another viable option to avoid congested zones. Additionally, residents moving between the G-6 and F-6 sectors are encouraged to utilize the China Chowk underpass or take a detour via Seventh Avenue leading to Jinnah Avenue, which remains open for traffic.

Further diversions include rerouting vehicles from Abpara Chowk towards Serena Hotel and advising drivers coming from Club Road or Bara Kahu to follow a longer path via Kashmir Chowk, Srinagar Highway, Seventh Avenue, and Margalla Road. These measures aim to disperse traffic evenly and reduce bottlenecks during the protest period. The authorities have emphasized the importance of adhering to these guidelines to avoid unnecessary delays and ensure smooth transit across the capital.

The traffic restrictions coincide with a planned protest march scheduled to move from the G-6 sector to D-Chowk, a hotspot for political demonstrations in Islamabad. As a result, all roads leading directly to D-Chowk are expected to remain closed throughout the duration of the protest to prevent overcrowding and maintain security. Police have urged citizens to stay updated on the evolving traffic situation by contacting the traffic helpline at 1915 or tuning into live traffic updates broadcasted on ITF FM 92.4.

These proactive steps reflect the authorities’ commitment to balancing the right to peaceful protest with the need to maintain public order in the capital. Residents and commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and remain patient as security forces manage the complex logistics surrounding the demonstrations. The situation remains dynamic, and further updates are expected as the events unfold.
