The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has officially announced its decision to collaborate closely with the federal government to establish the ambitious “Peshawar Valley Railway” line, a project set to transform transportation infrastructure in the provincial capital and its surrounding areas. This joint initiative marks a significant step toward improving rail connectivity and fostering economic development in the region.
In a formal communication addressed to the chairman of Pakistan Railways, the KP chief secretary revealed that initial feasibility studies for the railway line have already been initiated. These preliminary assessments are crucial in determining the technical and financial viability of the project, ensuring that the development proceeds on a solid foundation. The railway line is planned to be executed in multiple phases to cover key districts within the province.
The first phase of the project focuses on a 62-kilometer stretch connecting Peshawar, Nowshera, and Jahangir, laying the groundwork for enhanced passenger and freight movement. Following this, the second phase will extend the network further, encompassing a 65-kilometer route from Nowshera to Mardan and Dargai, a 27-kilometer link between Mardan and Charsadda, an 18-kilometer section from Peshawar to Jamrud, and a 60-kilometer corridor connecting Kohat to Jand. This comprehensive expansion aims to integrate multiple urban and rural centers, facilitating smoother transit and economic exchange.
Additionally, the provincial government is actively exploring the possibility of operating diesel multiple units (DMUs) and railcars on the existing railway infrastructure. This move could modernize the current system, offering more efficient and flexible services to commuters and freight operators alike. The introduction of such rolling stock is expected to reduce operational costs and improve service frequency, thereby attracting more users to rail transport.
Mohammad Zubair, KP’s Secretary of Transport, described the Peshawar Valley Railway project as a potential “game-changer” for the province. He emphasized that this collaboration between the provincial and federal governments represents a pioneering effort, as it is the first time both levels of government are jointly working on such a large-scale railway development. Zubair highlighted that the project is anticipated not only to stimulate the railway sector’s business and revenue streams but also to significantly cut down on the provincial government’s expenses related to infrastructure construction and maintenance.
Further details emerged from a meeting held on December 22, 2025, between the KP Chief Minister and officials from Pakistan Railways, where the mutual agreement to pursue this project was thoroughly discussed. The KP chief secretary noted that following extensive deliberations, the Chief Minister directed the formation of joint technical and planning teams comprising representatives from both Pakistan Railways and the KP government. These teams are tasked with collaboratively outlining a clear and mutually agreed strategy to move the project forward.
The framework to be developed by these teams will prioritize various aspects of the railway network, including the construction of new lines, the rehabilitation of existing corridors, and the enhancement of train services. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that the railway infrastructure meets current and future demands effectively. Moreover, the joint teams will conduct detailed cost-benefit analyses, assessing factors such as passenger demand, freight potential, economic returns, and the long-term sustainability of the railway operations.
Overall, the Peshawar Valley Railway project is poised to become a cornerstone of regional development, potentially revolutionizing transportation in KP by linking key districts and facilitating smoother movement of goods and people. The collaboration between the provincial and federal governments underscores a shared commitment to modernizing Pakistan’s railway infrastructure and promoting economic growth through improved connectivity.
