Scott Patterson Explains Departure from Sullivan’s Crossing After Season Three

Scott Patterson has officially confirmed his decision to part ways with the popular romantic drama series Sullivan’s Crossing following the conclusion of its third season. The actor, who portrayed the beloved character Sully Sullivan, revealed that his departure was a personal choice driven by his feelings about the show’s evolving creative direction. Patterson expressed that continuing with the series no longer felt fulfilling, marking the end of his journey with the franchise.

In a heartfelt message to fans, Patterson reflected on the strong bond he developed with Sully over the course of the show. He acknowledged the deep affection he held for the character and the storylines that brought Sully to life. However, he also admitted that the creative path the series was taking had become repetitive and no longer aligned with his artistic vision. This growing disconnect ultimately led him to step away from the role, despite his fondness for the character.

His absence was already a subject of much speculation among the show’s dedicated fanbase, especially after Patterson’s character was noticeably missing from the promotional materials for the upcoming fourth season. Neither the Season 4 trailer nor the official artwork or credits featured Sully Sullivan, fueling rumors about the actor’s status. Patterson clarified that the decision to leave was entirely his own, pushing back against any suggestions that the show had moved on without him.

Behind the scenes, it is understood that Patterson requested to be released from his contract after Season 3, citing concerns over the direction his character was taking. Showrunner Roma Roth explained that Season 3 concluded with Sully traveling to Ireland, and Season 4 picks up immediately after with Sully still abroad. While the character does not physically appear in the new season, Roth emphasized that Sully remains an integral part of the show’s universe, leaving the door open for a possible return in future episodes.

The upcoming fourth season will shift its focus primarily to Maggie Sullivan, played by Morgan Kohan, and her evolving relationship with Cal Jones, portrayed by Chad Michael Murray. This season promises to introduce new dramatic twists, including the arrival of Maggie’s ex-husband, whose unexpected revelation threatens to upend her life. Fans can expect fresh conflicts and emotional storylines as the series explores these new dynamics.

It is also worth noting that while the series will premiere on The CW in the United States on April 20, Canadian viewers will have the opportunity to watch the new season earlier, with a March 22 release date on CTV. This staggered premiere schedule highlights the show’s growing international appeal and the anticipation surrounding its latest chapter.
