ISLAMABAD: In a significant step towards enhancing Pakistan’s agricultural landscape and ensuring food security, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presided over a high-level meeting dedicated to the Ministry of National Food Security. During this session, the Prime Minister delivered an in-depth briefing on the comprehensive Strategic Roadmap aimed at transforming the country’s agriculture and food systems.
The Prime Minister elaborated that this roadmap is anchored on five fundamental pillars, each carefully designed to foster a resilient, efficient, and competitive agricultural sector. These pillars collectively aim to stabilize food production, improve supply chains, and boost the overall sustainability of the food industry in Pakistan. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to addressing long-standing challenges related to food availability and affordability.
Central to the strategy is the establishment of a National Food and Agriculture Security Council, which will serve as a coordinating body encompassing all federal units. This council is envisioned to facilitate seamless collaboration among provinces and federal agencies, ensuring unified policies and swift implementation of food security measures across the country. The Prime Minister emphasized that such coordination is vital to overcoming regional disparities and optimizing resource allocation.
Furthermore, the meeting underscored the importance of modernizing agricultural practices through innovation, technology adoption, and capacity building among farmers. The roadmap also includes measures to enhance market access and support smallholder farmers, who form the backbone of Pakistan’s agricultural economy. By integrating these elements, the government aims to create a food system that not only meets domestic demand but also strengthens Pakistan’s position in global agricultural markets.
This strategic approach comes at a critical time when global food security concerns are rising due to climate change, supply chain disruptions, and economic uncertainties. The Prime Minister’s focus on a coordinated, multi-dimensional plan highlights the urgency of securing Pakistan’s food future. Moving forward, the government plans to engage with stakeholders at all levels to ensure the successful execution of this roadmap, thereby safeguarding the nation’s food resources for generations to come.
