CJP Yahya Afridi Highlights Police’s Crucial Role in Fair Investigations and Justice Delivery

Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi, underscored the indispensable role that the police play in ensuring justice is delivered fairly and efficiently across the country. Speaking on Thursday, he stressed that the foundation of an effective justice system lies in the police conducting investigations that are not only professional but also objective and impartial. His remarks came during an interactive session with a delegation of 42 probationary officers from the Police Service of Pakistan, who are currently undergoing training as part of the 52nd Common Training Programme.

The officers were visiting the Supreme Court as part of their Professional Exchange Programme at the Federal Judicial Academy, which aims to foster a deeper understanding and collaboration between various justice sector institutions. The delegation was jointly led by the Director General of the Federal Judicial Academy alongside the Deputy Commandant of the National Police Academy, highlighting the importance of this institutional engagement in bridging the gap between law enforcement and judicial bodies.

During the session, Justice Afridi elaborated on the key elements of Pakistan’s criminal justice framework, emphasizing the police’s pivotal responsibility in conducting investigations that strictly adhere to legal procedures while safeguarding the rights of citizens. He pointed out that the police and judiciary function as two integral pillars within the criminal justice system, each with distinct but complementary roles. While the police are tasked with conducting impartial and lawful investigations, it is ultimately the courts that evaluate the evidence and deliver verdicts based on the facts presented before them.

Justice Afridi expressed optimism that the exposure these probationary officers receive at the Federal Judicial Academy will significantly enhance their comprehension of courtroom protocols, evidentiary standards, and the principles of fair trial. This, he noted, is essential for fostering stronger coordination and mutual respect between law enforcement agencies and the judiciary, which is critical for the overall effectiveness of the justice system.

He further urged the officers to uphold the highest standards of integrity, fairness, and unwavering commitment to the rule of law throughout their careers. Highlighting their role as public servants, the Chief Justice reminded them of the importance of remaining accessible, courteous, and responsive to the citizens they serve. He emphasized that true responsive governance begins with respect for both the law and the people it is designed to protect, reinforcing the idea that justice must be both fair and approachable.

Concluding the visit, a formal exchange of souvenirs took place between the Supreme Court and the visiting delegation, symbolizing a gesture of goodwill and the strengthening of institutional ties. This interaction reflects ongoing efforts to promote collaboration and understanding among the various branches of Pakistan’s justice sector, ultimately aiming to improve the delivery of justice across the nation.
