The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has formally granted unanimous approval to the Safeguards Agreement with Pakistan concerning the application of safeguards at Unit 5 of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant, known as Chashma-5. This endorsement reflects growing international trust in Pakistan’s dedication to utilizing nuclear technology strictly for peaceful and civilian energy purposes. The decision marks a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to expand its clean energy infrastructure while adhering to global nuclear safety protocols.
Chashma-5 is designed to be a state-of-the-art Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) with a planned electricity generation capacity of 1,200 megawatts (MW). The project is slated to become operational by the year 2030, adding a significant new source of low-carbon electricity to Pakistan’s national grid. Once functional, this facility will play a crucial role in bolstering the country’s energy security by reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Currently, Pakistan operates a total of six nuclear power plants with an aggregate capacity of 3,530 MW. Nuclear energy already constitutes approximately 18.3 percent of the country’s overall electricity generation mix, and it accounts for 34 percent of the total low-carbon energy production. This impressive track record is underpinned by more than a century of cumulative reactor operation years, all conducted under stringent safety, security, and safeguard measures.
