Pakistan to Experience First Total Lunar Eclipse of 2026 This Evening

On Tuesday evening, residents across Pakistan will have the rare opportunity to observe the first total lunar eclipse of the year 2026. This astronomical event will paint the moon in a distinctive reddish or copper shade, a phenomenon caused by Earth’s shadow falling directly on the lunar surface. The national space agency, SUPARCO, has provided detailed timings and viewing information for enthusiasts eager to witness this captivating celestial display.

The eclipse will commence with a partial phase coinciding with moonrise in various parts of the country, allowing observers to catch the spectacle shortly after sunset. In Karachi, for instance, the moon is expected to appear above the horizon at approximately 6:36 p.m., with the eclipse reaching its peak just 13 minutes later at 6:49 p.m. This timing offers a brief but spectacular window for skywatchers in the southern metropolis to enjoy the event.

Meanwhile, in the federal capital Islamabad and several areas within Punjab province, the partial eclipse will conclude earlier, around 6:17 p.m. However, the northern region of Gilgit-Baltistan is anticipated to provide the clearest and most prolonged view of the eclipse, starting at 5:59 p.m. This difference in timing and visibility is due to the geographical positioning and local horizon lines in these areas.

SUPARCO has confirmed that the entire eclipse sequence will officially end nationwide by 7:23 p.m., marking the conclusion of this fascinating lunar phenomenon. For those unfamiliar, a lunar eclipse occurs when Earth aligns precisely between the sun and the moon, casting its shadow and temporarily darkening the moon’s surface. During a total eclipse, sunlight passing through Earth’s atmosphere bends and filters, giving the moon its characteristic blood-red tint.

It is important to note that unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are completely safe to observe with the naked eye. SUPARCO has reassured the public that no special glasses or protective gear are necessary to enjoy the event. This makes it accessible to people of all ages who wish to experience one of nature’s most beautiful and awe-inspiring spectacles.

As Pakistan prepares for this astronomical highlight, experts encourage families and astronomy enthusiasts alike to take advantage of the clear skies forecasted for the evening. Whether viewed from urban centers or remote areas, the total lunar eclipse promises to be a memorable event, connecting viewers with the wonders of the cosmos right above their heads.
