Karachi is currently grappling with significant traffic snarls on II Chundrigar Road as authorities have imposed closures on several major thoroughfares across the city. These measures come in response to heightened security concerns following recent demonstrations sparked by the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The shutdown of critical arteries such as MT Khan Road and Mai Kolachi Road has severely disrupted the usual traffic patterns, leading to widespread delays and commuter frustration.
The administration has completely sealed off the stretch extending from MT Khan Road to PIDC Road, as well as the segment leading up to the Mai Kolachi Road railway crossing. This has forced vehicles that would normally use these routes to seek alternative paths, placing additional pressure on II Chundrigar Road. Traffic originating from the Tower area is now being diverted onto II Chundrigar Road, while vehicles coming from the PIDC side are rerouted towards the Shaheen Complex, further intensifying congestion on these already busy roads.
Traffic police officials have confirmed that the rerouting has created particularly heavy bottlenecks on the route from Tower to PIDC, making commuting a challenge for many residents and workers in the area. To manage the situation, law enforcement personnel have been stationed at multiple key junctions to regulate traffic flow and prevent complete gridlock. Despite these efforts, the volume of vehicles and limited alternative routes have made it difficult to ease the congestion.
Authorities have urged motorists and the general public to avoid traveling near the Tower and PIDC areas if possible and to use alternative routes to minimize delays. The city has been facing ongoing traffic disruptions since Sunday, coinciding with widespread protests across Karachi. These demonstrations were held in response to the US and Israel’s military actions against Iran, which have sparked strong reactions locally.
It is important to highlight that the protests have unfortunately turned violent in some instances, with at least 10 people losing their lives due to gunshot injuries during clashes in Karachi. Several others have been wounded, adding to the tense atmosphere in the city. The current road closures and traffic challenges are part of the broader security measures aimed at preventing further unrest and maintaining public order amid this volatile situation.
